SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)

To access an SFTP site set up by iMarc you will need an SFTP client and an internet connection.

Most FTP programs also support SFTP. Our favorites include: FileZilla (free, Windows-only), CuteFTP (Windows), Transmit (Mac), and Dreamweaver MX 2004 or higher (Window and Mac).

If you’re using Transmit, CuteFTP, or a similar SFTP program, try following the instructions for FileZilla.
Instructions for Dreamweaver are below.

Using FileZilla

You can download FileZilla here. FileZilla is a free SFTP program for Windows. Mac users might be interested in the free, Fugu or the more refined, Transmit.

the sitemanager button is on the top left

Setting up an SFTP connection with FileZilla is a cinch! First, open FileZilla, and click the ‘open site manager’ button, circled to the left

In the site manager:

  1. Click the ‘new site’ button on the bottom-left.
  2. Name your new site whatever you please
  3. For the ‘host’, type in your domain name (example: your.domain.com)
  4. Select ‘SFTP using SSH2’ from the ‘servertype’ drop-down box
  5. Select the ‘normal’ radio button from the logontype menu
  6. Enter the Username given to you by iMarc
  7. Enter the Password given to you by iMarc
  8. Click ‘Connect’ to save your settings and attempt to connect to your server
Filezilla file structure screen

Once successfully logged in, you should see the file structure to the left. The directory you will want to upload to is named after your domain. Simply open that directory and drag and drop your files onto the server.

Using Dreamweaver MX (2004 and newer)

site options are at the top of your window

Select ‘Manage Sites...’ from the ‘Site’ menu at the top of your window, and either select your site from the list and click ‘Edit…’, or click the ‘New…’ button at the top right.

To edit your ftp settings, click the ‘advanced’ tab at the top of the dialog box, and then select ‘Remote Info’ from the categories list.

  • Access: Select ‘FTP’ from the drop-down
  • FTP Host: Enter your domain name (example: your.domain.com)
  • Host Directory: this is the directory on the server you’ll be uploading to. In almost all cases you will be uploading your live content into a folder that is named after your domain. ie. /your.domain.com.
  • Login & Password: enter the login and password supplied by iMarc
  • SFTP: Check off ‘Use Secure FTP’, and uncheck any other checkboxes by default
  • OK: click the ‘Ok’ button at the bottom to store and implement your settings
