Nerdmares

by Jeff Turcotte - January 31, 2008 / 9:57am View more articles

A nerdmare is not a nightmare.

A nerdmare is not a nerdy nightmare either.

A nerdmare is much worse than both.

A benefit for the nerdmare is that one is most likely not terrified.

A benefit for the nightmare is that there is a chance of getting some sleep.

Nerdmares leave you tired and cranky.

Nerdmares come in two distinct variations:

  • You forget to sleep because you're completely engrossed in programming/gaming/*nix/books/you name it.
  • You try to sleep, but your brain won't let you as it's insatiably fueled by and wrapped around an especially nerdy topic.

Unfortunately, last night I experienced the most ironically disturbing type B nerdmare, centered around REST.

Somebody get me a coffee.

Have you ever had a nerdmare?

I once had a nerdmare in which I was viewing life through the Photoshop interface. The background was almost like the town in the Truman Show. Bright colors and straight lines. I would see the toolbars and windows and if I didn't like something I'd lasso it and delete it. Or use the eraser tool or the cloning stamp. It was really frustrating, especially when I started applying repeated Gaussian Blurs to people's faces.

Then King Kong showed up and I started jumping over barrels to save an endlessly in turmoil princess that never put out.

I had a dream the other night that involved a bunch of work things and for some reason I wasn't there. It was around 1:30pm, and I remember thinking that the day felt almost over, but if I was at work I'd feel like I had a bunch of time left in the day to get stuff done.

I have these a bunch, and it feels like I remember them again as they're happening. Kinda like deja-vu, but recognizing it the first time.

I've had many nerdmares. I had a DOS nerdmare once where I was stuck helplessly at a black screen with a flashing prompt.

As often as I have nerdmares, I have designerdreams. In my dream, I'll be looking at a really cool website I found, or working on a project. I'll find myself thinking in the dream, "man, thats a nice site...why didn't I think of that". Then when I wake up, I plagiarize my own dream concepts.

Oh, the irony.

To be denied rest because of REST.

I've definitely had nights where I couldn't sleep because I was obsessing over a particular project or designing/coding in my head. Unfortunately, unlike Christian, I don't seem to remember any awesome ideas. Lame.

I have nerdmares when I'm working relatively long hours on particularly complex code. Basically my work follows me into my sleep. The nerdmares almost always involve trying to program a loop with a complicated mathematical formula for a website check out or something like that. Inevitably, as soon as I solve the equation my dream circles back to the beginning and I have to solve it over and over and over again. When I wake up in the middle of it and go back to sleep the dream picks up again.
