Pythagorean Stats for iMarc Wiffle Ball

by Dave Tufts - July 13, 2007 / 3:49pm View more articles

It's no secret – I love the Pythagorean winning percentage statistic. Whether for Major League Baseball or the NFL or any sport, this statistic tells you the number of games a sports team should win based on the number of points they've scored and the number of points they've given up.

For example, according to my own MLB Pythagorean stats, the New York Yankees should have won about 50 games so far. However, in reality the Yankees are currently 43 and 43. The Yankees have a .579% Pythagorean winning percentage, but only a .500% winning percentage.

This is bad news for Red Sox fans. The numbers tells us that the Yankees have played well, soring a lot more runs than they've given up and they probably won't end the season at .500. Expect a much better second half from them. Of course, the Red Sox have the best Pythagorean winning percentage as well as the best real winning percentage, so go ahead and make plans for this year's rolling rally.

Unfortunately, the rookies at iMarc don't seem to have such an optimistic future :)

On Friday afternoons, iMarcians play Wiffle ball – Rookies (newer employees) vs. Veterans. In three games this year, the Vets have outscored the rookies considerably.

Does anyone have any pitching, hitting, or base running advice for the rookies?

Swing at the ball.

Pitching:
1. Holes right, solid left. Throw like a split-finger fastball.
2. Never, never try a curveball.

Hitting:
1. Swing forward.
2. Chop wood, not sweep the floor.
3. Never bunt OR swing light to cause a grounder.

Base running:
1. Steal home, often.
2. It is more than acceptable to pants the first baseman.
3. Must, MUST, taunt the pitcher.

Other than that....Talk a bigger game than you actually play. They other team may win, but you got the last word.

Nick, how do you deal with balls and strikes in your games?

I'm a first pitch swinger. I figure the pitcher is trying harder than I am to do a good job. So I assume its a big cheese pitch. Unless T (Fred) is pitching, then I assume its a bean ball or a way outside knuckler.
"Thanks Wii Sports"!

I guess we treat balls and strikes like real baseball. I guess we consider wiffleball to be Baseball lite. Same rules, etc.

We bring a chair to the park and place it behind home plate. If the ball hits the chair it's a strike, if not, it's a ball.

Swings, misses, and fouls are the same as baseball, but in iMarc Wiffle ball there aren't any walks. That leads to a lot of 14 and 2 counts, but the alternative would be every player drawing a walk. And there's no taking first if you're hit by a pitch.

The entire season is made up of 3-game series. Win two games and you win the series and the other team buys you an iced coffee. If all goes well, I'll be drinking a free iced coffee next Friday at 3pm.

iMarc Whiffle is starting to sound suspiciously like a way of extracting free iced coffee from the rookies...
