Dashes, Underscores, URLs, SEO and Humans

Wednesday, March 19, 2008 – If you browse around the web some looking for search engine optimization (SEO) tips and techniques you are bound to run into the a dash is better than an underscore in a URL “rule”. This has always bugged me since underscores give better visual separation of the words, which I tend to equate to easier reading for us humans. Way back in 2005, Matt Cutts from Google explained that Google treats dashes and underscores differently, and…

My Daughter’s First Internet Word

Friday, February 15, 2008 – Over the past month or so our fifteen-month-old daughter, Audrey, has been picking up words like crazy. Pretty much anything you say she will try to repeat. She is really good about context and can identify many of the items in our home along with lots of animals and other things. Last night my wife, Jess, and I were talking about looking for a co-sleeper for our upcoming baby. During the conversation Jess mentioned googling co-sleepers. Not a…

HTML Title Tags Done Right

Monday, February 11, 2008 – Tabbed browsing is an awesome thing. Websites that use the HTML title tag poorly tend to make it not so awesome. Some sites just kind of forget about the tag, others order the content incorrectly and don't even get me started about stuffing keywords. Anyway, let’s talk about making user-friendly title tag contents. Probably the most frustrating patterns is when all of the pages on a site use the same title tag contents — usually the site’s name. It is…

Firefox Html Validator on Ubuntu Gutsy

Friday, October 12, 2007 – Recently here at work I took the plunge. I downloaded the beta version of Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon…gosh they have awesome names) and installed it on my workstation. Yes, it took me a little while to really get settled. Yes, I do boot up my old Windows XP install inside of VMWare in case I forgot something. The reason I recently switched is because Wine has made some great improvements. Version 0.9.46 supports installing, activating and…

You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

Monday, August 13, 2007 – Apple is really good at hype (see iPhone). Unfortunately, they tend to contradict themselves and over-simplify complicated issues when it suits their goals. Actually, lots of companies do this, but Apple sticks out to me because of their tongue-in-cheek methods. You’ve probably heard Apple rag on how insecure Windows is, but then you may have also heard how awesome it is that you can run Windows apps on a Mac. Guess what? To run…

What Program(s) do You Use for Web Development?

Wednesday, July 11, 2007 – As a developer, I have always found that good development tools can make a huge amount of difference in productivity and general enjoyment while programming. Ideally these tools help you automate the redundant tasks and leave the important decisions to you. Since I spend on average 7+ hours a day writing HTML/CSS & PHP and working with servers, I’m always on the lookout for tools that help me get the job done. Out of all of the…

9 Expert CSS Ideas You Should Think Twice About Before Using

Thursday, May 10, 2007 – Smashing Magazine does an excellent job of providing quality resources for web developers. Today while checking out Digg, I noticed that they have a new article entitled 70 Expert Ideas For Better CSS Coding. The article contains lots of good information on how to improve your CSS, however there are a number of ideas presented that should be taken with a grain of salt. Section 1.1 Idea: Keep a library of helpful CSS…

XML Pretty Printer in PHP5

Thursday, March 15, 2007 – Today I was working with debugging some XML, and needed a way to make the XML more readable. The following is a little function that should do the job for some simple XML, and you can probably tweak it to your needs. It uses PHP5's SimpleXMLElement object to parse and return the XML, then indents it in a logical way. editAreaLoader.init({ id : "textarea_1" ,syntax : "php" ,start_highlight : true…

ZIP Code Distances with PHP & PostgreSQL

Friday, March 9, 2007 – On a recent project we needed to determine the closest locations to a user's ZIP code, a common feature seen on many web sites. The ZIP code database we use has 42,317 unique ZIP codes, so a US-wide search is quite a bit of work. The example I am testing against below isn't a real-world example since we won't have a location in every ZIP code, however I wanted to determine the most efficient method and tweak my code from there.…
