A coworker introduced me to a fun little iPhone application today. CameraBag imitates a variety of common cameras from the past century.
Each style evokes a sense of the past, ranging from gritty 1960's photojournalism, to faded photos from my childhood years, to Ansel Adams' smooth black and whites, to the beautiful low-fi Holga of the 80's.
I was struck by how this feel changes the subject; how profoundly content is affected by its…

Barbara Kingsolver, author of the garden and locavore focused Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is a proficient fiction and non-fiction writer. In a recent interview, Kingsolver used a great metaphor to highlight the difference in writing fiction versus writing non-fiction.
The way you make a garden in the desert is you point to a spot and put all your energy into that. You water it and you make something grow. Back east, the way you make…

Last year, I wrote about how beneficial it is when experts voice strong opinions, instead of doing exactly what the client asks. In that article, I was the customer. The chimney on our house needed repair. The first two companies gave me a quote for exactly what I asked for. The third guy said, "you don't really want what you're asking for — it will be a lot more efficient to do this…"
Twice recently I found myself, again, in the role of novice customer…

The showdown is finally here. USC Trojan's vs. Oregon Beavers. We showed up today in full regalia to support our teams. (WE being myself and Karin).
Although I didn't actually attend USC, my family has a history of Trojan fanaticism due to my brother in law's reign as Pete Carroll's right hand man. Championship bowls and Heisman Winners are just part of our heritage. We don't want to rub it in the face of our opponent..its just simply a fact.…

A couple of weeks ago I took some time off to set up a small party that I was planning. It involved a tournament for washers, a game similar to horseshoes, but better (as I sell it people).
As it turns out, I don’t know enough people willing to participate in what I was really planning, but I like what I’ve created and I’d like to show you why you should never leave me on my own for two days without checking in on me.
The following was created in 22…

Chances are that you have an iPhone or an iPod touch. If you don’t, you’ve at least seen someone using one. When someone adds your website to their home screen, you can designate an image to show up, instead of just having a thumbnail of your website. Little details like this can make all the difference. The iPhone has been around long enough for it’s users to have that little moment of disappointment when they don’t see one appear.
When…

Earlier this week Paul Kelley joined iMarc as a designer.
Paul brings a unique mix of skills—the ability to create engaging visual designs, clean layouts, and flash animations, while focusing on SEO and semantic code. I mean, who doesn't get excited when a designer talks about semantic and accessible markup.
Welcome to iMarc Paul.

I took the first half of this week off to put in a new kitchen floor with my dad. I was struck by the similarity to overhauling an existing web site. Lots of prep work before you get to the surprisingly small amount of final work whose product you see directly.
My wife and I live in a small house, with a small kitchen — just 10'x12', including the counters. The house is pretty new, built in 1957, so we didn't anticipate major structural repairs...
But still, we…

Recently, Inc. expanded their list with a web supplement that profiles to the top 5000 companies.
This year iMarc made the list—almost breaking the half way point.

Scrabulous, one of the most popular Facebook add-on applications, is no longer available to many users. Scrabulous was an online copy of Hasbro's board game that allowed users to play Scrabble with each other.
There are a number of articles explaining what happened, but I don't understand why—from a business perspective—Hasbro wanted to remove the popular copy.
Facebook users could choose to play Scrabulous, the rip-off…
