Welcome Angelo

Wednesday, November 4, 2009 – On Monday, iMarc added our first front-end developer to the growing team. Welcome Angelo Simeoni. Wait... did you say "first" front-end developer? Yes. Until now, all front-end HTML, CSS, and Javascript has been shared by the developers and designers. We've benefited from programmers who understand usability, typography and design; as well as designers who are comfortable cutting up comps and writing Javascript. However, we also…

The Awkward 'Tweens (We're 12!)

Wednesday, November 4, 2009 – iMarc is 12 years old Yesterday we had a little birthday party as we turned 12 years old. As we enter the awkward 'tween years, we look back with fondness at some of our own strange old websites. But we also look forward. Here's a sneak peak at our new website about to be launched... Happy 12th Birthday To Us

Prepare for Battle

Friday, October 23, 2009 – This weekend, once again, Oregon State and USC are GOING TO WAR! And iMarc represents. Allow me to introduce iMarc's Warriors. For USC: KIM "Bring It On" JACKSON For OSU: KARIN "No Prisoners" KLAPAK This year, it's not just a friendly competition — it's a grudge match. Because last year, Kim brought it on. And her proud warrior tradition ... did not prevail. Once again, they're talking trash and proudly sporting team regalia and…

Mini-Golf Setup

Thursday, October 22, 2009 – Our office is no longer an office. It's a mini-golf course. On Monday, we play for a green jacket. One of the best features is Rob's Tweeting Webcam. He set up a motion activated web cam that posts images and tweets whenever someone plays his hole. Genius!

Project Documents, Vacation Souvenirs

Wednesday, September 30, 2009 – I recently heard the following gem from Jared Spool. In his Userability #10 Podcast, Jared talks about persona documents, relating the documents to vacation souvenirs: "The document itself is like a vacation souvenir. It really doesn't hold much meaning except to those people who had the experience." How true. In an older blog, Jared equated persona docs to souvenir picture albums. Consider a friend who sends you a link to…

Web Development and the Art of Home Improvement

Thursday, September 24, 2009 – The recent acquisition of a circa-1920 Colonial fixer-upper in Portsmouth means that I've been spending my days learning the ropes here at iMarc, and my nights taking a crash course in home improvement. As my girlfriend and I are often not working within earshot of each other, I'm spending a lot of time alone with my thoughts. As I reflect upon the day, I've been noticing a number of parallels — good practices that seem to apply to…

Resumes: Why We Ignore Word

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 – When iMarc posts a job opening, we include instructions for How To Apply. This section typically includes the following: Send us a link to your online (HTML) resume or email us a PDF or plain text resume. Inquiries without links to web-based work will probably be ignored. Resumes sent as Word documents will also likely be ignored. Inevitably, the line about ignoring Word documents causes issues. In fact,…

Nick commented: Congratulations on the anniversaries. I had a professor tell me early on at the Art Institute that "you can expect to change web jobs every 2-3 years until you settle somewhere". I love proving this guy wrong every day. Congrats again.

  • Twitter, Alone, Is Not Customer Service

Jay G commented: Same here, and my story is with Alaska Air, too. Their website said the customer service phone number was open something like 8am-8pm PST, but this was after hours, so I tweeted. Lo, and behold, I got a tweet response in 10 minutes with the 24/7 phone number. But this didn't change the confusion from their website…

  • Mobile browsers: Here's the data

Robert Mohns commented: The data comes from visitors to iMarc.net — an important detail I forgot to include! — not the web as a whole. As for why so little Flash on mobile devices… I'd say this is because even Flash Lite is pretty resource intensive, and it's just not essential to the core content most people need to access. I don't think it has a lot to do…

  • Mobile browsers: Here's the data

Jason Cronkhite commented: Robert, The data on Flash is interesting. What is your source? I am interested because of my interest in a live streaming company. Further, I'm curious why this is the case for Flash. Is there any merit to HTML5 that Jobs argues? Do you think this has anything to do with mobile network capacity for streaming…
