4 Greatest Numbers Less Than Five

Digg, del.icio.us, and every other social bookmarking site seem littered with enumerated lists. There are lists for the 5 Greatest Sculptors of All Time. Lists for 85 Ajax Solutions for Professional Coding. Lists for anything.

Following this trend, I present the 4 Greatest Numbers Less Than Five:

  1. One - In the words of the 80's Swedish pop duo, Roxette, "one is such a lonely number". Fortunately for this lonely digit, it also tops my list of the 4 Greatest Numbers Less Than Five.
  2. Two - The smallest and first prime number is two. In my youth, two was my favorite number because it was Jerry Remy's number.
  3. Three - Three is the first odd prime number on my list. It's also, according to De La Soul, the magic number.
  4. Four - The smallest composite number, four, is kind of cool, but doesn't have the cache of one, two, or three. Therefore (intentional pun), four is at the bottom of my list.

If you've never heard Blind Melon's version of that song you speak of, you're really missing out. Who knew that they were way better than just No Rain?

Unfortunately my favorite number (five) didn't make the list. It's a rebuilding year anyway.

Lists are totally out of control.

As for 'one', I will forgive the misstep quoting a Roxette song. The correct choice here should be the aptly named track written and performed by Harry Nilsson, but popularized by 3 Dog Night.

All the Roulette Tables in the world tell me that 1 is the first odd number.

Also, I would have put 3 above 2. This coming from all of my Gaming experience (FPS and such). 2 bad guys is no sweat, but when that third wheel shows up its either "Unleash the dogs of war" or "Run like a sissy school girl".

Jeff, don't don't hate on Swedish pop rock... Anyway, if I wanted a song simply named "One", there are some much better (and some worse) choices out there:

"One" by 3 Dog Night = B- "One" by Metallica = B+ "One" by U2 = D+ "One" by The Bee Gees = C- "One" by Creed = D "One" by Harry Nilsson = C

"One" from the smash Broadway hit, A Chorus Line = A+

@Neeko: That's because gamblers can't do math.

@Robert: Normally true, but House odds on Even / Odd still favor 1 being Odd.

@Dave: Ok, ok, I can see giving Metallica's "One" a B+, but losing to showtunes.......

I'm not a fan of showtunes, but my Mom used play Chorus Line when I was a kid - the gatefold double vinyl with raised letting.

...so I have a soft stop in my heart for whiny voices singing "One, singular sensation, Every little step she takes".

Bono's going to write a song about this. You wait.
